Motivation & Mindset

Much of what we do is governed by our habits, there is a good reason for this. If we were unable to form habits, day to day life would be virtually impossible. Habits are formed by doing something over and over again until the action or behavior becomes unconscious – you just don’t have to think about it any more. Our brains actively hold onto habits, just to make life easier for us. Imagine if every time you got in your car, you had to learn how to drive again because your brain had just dropped the habit. Unfortunately the brain does not differentiate between good habits that are useful to your everyday life and bad habits that you actively want to get rid of – like compulsive eating. That’s why when you try to change behavior with willpower alone it rarely works, and if it does work for a while you are very likely to relapse back into old behaviors, this is known as the snap-back effect. Your mind takes you back to what you are most comfortable with.

If we are talking about slimming and changing unhelpful eating habits that keep you overweight you can see the real challenges you face. So it is essential to include some kind of mindset change in any new diet or healthy eating plan you embark on.

Let me give you an analogy; imagine your brain is like the hard drive of a computer, your beliefs, habits, and thoughts are like the computer software, you can decide to change the software that no longer serves you and there are many powerful mind re-programming techniques available to you that will allow you to do this. Allocating 30 – 40 minutes per day to work with one or more of the following techniques will enable you to change your mindset from that of an overweight person to that of a naturally slim person and you will probably notice the added benefit of increased self-esteem and confidence in the process.
